General Practice in Aged Care Incentive (GPACI) Patient Registration Update

The General Practice in Aged Care Incentive (GPACI) commenced on 1 July 2024, with eligibility for the first quarter (July – September 2024) assessed and paid in October 2024.

Some GPACI-registered practices and their GPs did not receive the quarter one payment they expected as their MyMedicare-registered patients weren’t registered properly for GPACI in the Organisation Register.

For a limited time, the Department of Health and Aged Care is allowing practices who were registered for GPACI to backdate their MyMedicare-registered patients’ GPACI registration. This will allow re-assessment of eligible services delivered from July to December 2024.

Your practice and GPs may be eligible for GPACI payments for this period if the servicing requirements in the GPACI guidelines were met. That is, if your patient/s received:

  • two eligible regular services, each in a separate calendar month, and
  • at least one of the regular visits was by the Responsible Provider.

GPACI registration dates are allowed to be backdated for patients who:

  • were registered for MyMedicare but were not registered correctly for GPACI, or
  • were registered for MyMedicare and GPACI but the date was after the eligible services were delivered by the Responsible Provider .

Practices must backdate the GPACI registration date for any MyMedicare-registered patients impacted by this error by 31 March 2025.

You can only select a date for your patient’s GPACI registration if the following were also in place on that date:

  • The practice was registered for GPACI.
  • The provider being selected as the Responsible Provider was linked to your practice in the Organisation Register.
  • The patient was registered with your practice for MyMedicare.
  • GPACI had commenced (1 July 2024).

Detailed instructions for backdating are in the attachment.

Some requests for a Review of Decision (RoD) have been received by Services Australia, which will be impacted by this change. Any RoD that has been submitted will be responded to individually, and the response will be in line with the advice in this email.
