Wellbeing wins in the Yoorana Gunya women’s group
The WNSW PHN is proud to support the work of the Yoorana Gunya Social and Emotional Wellbeing (SEWB) program in Forbes, with outreach to Cowra and Weddin. The SEWB program assists Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients to enhance their health and wellbeing through holistic and culturally appropriate care.
A representative from the team recently shared a story about the impact of the program on one client with limited social and friendship support. This client has been attending the women’s group for the past few months. She has numerous health conditions that make it very difficult for her to attend social events. This has impacted her mental health to the point she only attends medical appointments. Her health has caused her to isolate from friends and family because of the toll it takes on her both mentally and physically.
From the SEWB team
“To start attending the women’s group took a lot of courage, and she had to push herself to step outside of her comfort zone.
“Watching her show up week after week and continue to feel more comfortable and more connected to other people has been incredible.
“We’ve watched her come to life, by making new friends and support networks.
“To see the difference in her and her outlook on life has been so rewarding.
“This lady no longer feels like she needs to isolate herself. She is open to the opportunities that life presents to her.
“It has been a real pleasure to watch the changes in this woman and see how we can impact people’s lives for the better, just by creating safe spaces and growing connections.”
From the women’s group member
“I love coming here each Friday and having morning tea and a yarn and getting out of the house for something other than medical appointments, I have made so many friends and love the different activities each week.”
The SEWB team provides a range of programs to the community to support culture, spirit, family and community connection. To learn more about the Yoorana Gunya SEWB Program, you can visit https://yooranagunya.com.au/social-and-emotional-wellbeing/
